All about Cacao

Sacred raw cacao

Cacao is more than just a hot, chocolatey drink, it’s a powerful plant medicine rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and essential minerals. It has forty times the antioxidants of blueberries, and can offer remarkable health benefits.

With weekly use, I’ve noticed improvements to my memory and focus as well as a gentle energy boost. At the same time, its high magnesium content helps me to relax in preparation for a restful night’s sleep.

Cacao has been used in rituals and ceremonies for thousands of years, by the Aztecs and Mayans. Today cacao is trending in wellness and spiritual circles.

Indigenous families used to share a hot cup of cacao before bed, sitting and sharing news of the day, to bond and wind down. My partner and I repeat this simple ritual most evenings, to connect with the plant and with each other.

When I share the cacao during a ceremony, the group gains a deep connection to the plant and to each other. This sacred plant opens the heart and allows us to deepen feelings of peace, love, and gratitude. It enhances the spiritual connection of meditation and self- awareness.

Cacao

It is important to know where the cacao is cultivated and harvested to preserve its spiritual properties.

I source my cacao from a farming family in the Peruvian Amazon who lovingly grow and process the chocolate. Sustainable growth and harvest is paramount, as the plant is a gift.

We should support the communities that nurture these plants. Cacao might be trending, but it deserves our respect and mindful consumption.
